PROGSIG

Welcome to CLUG PROGSIG

What is CLUG PROGSIG?

CLUG is short for the Calgary Linux Users Group, and SIG is short for Special Interest Group. CLUG PROGSIG is a loosely knit group of members who have an interest in computer programming.

What does CLUG PROGSIG do?

CLUG PROGSIG has a mailing list where members can post questions or comments on programming related issues, or on issues specific to the group itself. In this way, the members can request help, or mentoring from others on the list. The group also meets once a month to see a presentation on a programming related topic, and/or socialize with other group members in person.

What languages or operating systems does CLUG PROGSIG focus on?

None. Programming has a large number of similarities, regardless of what language or OS you use. Variable declarations, conditional statements, and loops occur in open source and proprietary languages. That said though, if the group must make a choice of topics for presentations or direction, it has been decided by the group that we will lean towards open source languages and platforms. Mostly because it is easier for a new developer to acquire them.

Does CLUG PROGSIG only discuss programming?

No. Programming covers a large number of topics. We have found that those interested in the group have an interest in the non-language specific items, such as Systems Analysis and Design, or Project Management. The presentations at our monthly meetings have thus far focused on these types of topics, rather than Learning PHP or some other language. That said though, the group is also open to language specific topics for presentations.

What programming skills do I need before joining the group?

None. We make every effort to accommodate both new developers and experienced developers. We encourage the new developers to join and take advantage of any mentoring the group may offer. We also encourage experienced developers to take part, and possibly learn something about a language or platform they do not have experience with.

How do I join the group, and how much does it cost?

If you sign up on the mailing list, or can make it to one of the monthly meetings, you are counted as a member of the group. There are no costs for membership or attending a meeting.

When and where are the meetings?

CLUG PROG-SIG is currently on indefinite hiatus. If you are interested in organizing it, let us know on the CLUG mailing list.
