July 7th Meeting Notes

This month's meeting started off with a tailgate barbecue, with Kin bringing a grill and everybody chipping in with food and conversation. We liked it so much, we'll try doing it again on the next meeting August 4th :-)

The first presentation was by Eric Beaudoin on the m4 macro processor. With m4, you can easily change around parts of your source code, regardless of language. For more information on m4, check out its manual.

The second presentation was on the gopher protocol, which is the predecessor of HTTP. We went over how to surf it with Overbite, and how you can easily create your own gopher server using pygopherd.

We also took a quick look at HTTPS Everywhere, which is a Firefox plugin that automatically switches to an HTTPS connection when it sees a website in its ruleset - this is important for banking and surfing securely.

The book swap was a great success, and in the end only a couple of books were left over. This will also be continued in the future ;-)
