OK, so you are not in fact using the nvidia binary driver.

sudo find / -iname nvidia-xconfig\*

I have never used this command so I am not sure what it does.

The letters on the left are the package status, "i" means installed, "p"
means not installed (or purged state), "v" stands for virtual package.

- From a terminal try this:
lsmod |grep nvidia

If you do not get anything in return, try this:
sudo modprobe nvidia

Then look at the output of dmesg.  There should be a line or two at the
end that will tell you what happened.
