Just to let you know, Calgary has an outfit that does give computers to
charitable organizations for free as long as they have a charitable number.
They are under recyclers in the yellow pages.

I agree - if you're not asking the exec to do something specific which
is a blocking task, just go ahead as a group of like-minded
individuals.  

When/if you bring it to the exec, ask for whatever resources you need.
This forces you to form a case/rationale around why you should be
sponsored and how your goals are aligned with CLUGs.  You'll have a more
focused request which is easier to action.  If declined, you can still
take that request elsewhere as it remains well formed and actionable.

I think this idea goes a long way toward answering the question posed here
recently about CLUG's redefined role.
I have a seven-year-old, bottom-of-the-line Celeron-based Dell that was
ready for the scrap heap with Windows XP. I put Ubuntu 9.04 on it in May and
it's worked fine ever since.
I did everything myself -- even though I am not a technical person and have
no command line knowledge. So that's my testimonial for the Ubuntu's ease of
use.
My (albeit limited) experience suggests charities and non-profits who don't
have Linux knowledge or IT support could use Ubuntu.
I would certainly be willing to contribute my time. I wouldn't part with my
own Linux machine, but companies often have old machines that end up being
scrapped or sold at clearance prices, and I'd love to do more installs.
This idea just makes so much sense and is so consistent with what the free
software movement is about.
And for anyone who might be job seeking some day, a bit of volunteer work
never hurts your resume.
Any more thoughts on this?
Doesn't some sort of non-profit computer-recycling program operate in
Vancouver? Maybe we could touch base with them....

They have a Calgary branch too.  Message me off list if you want to talk 
to them regarding this effort - I have the contact info for the person 
you'd need to speak with.  Or just call them, they're not a huge 
organization.. :)

Finding the computers won't be much of a problem.  Getting them checked 
out, installed/set up, that's where the effort is.  Perhaps at an 
install-fest where all "regular" members are encouraged to set up one 
box for charity while they are there, in addition to their own box(es).
