One likely possibility:

Is it a desktop PC that has a SB128 plugged into it?  If so, the
desktop may have came with some sort of a sound card built-in, and
this is what Ubuntu is using instead of the SB128. If so, it may show
up in the BIOS. If your friend is not using it, disable it in the
BIOS.
