I've got a 5th Gen iPod which I've loaded Rockbox to. Rockbox does away with
the Apple iPod interface (though you always go back to it, if you like).
What I like about Rockbox is that on any platform I can just drag and drop
my files into the iPod like a mass storage device.
Rockbox can be found here: http://www.rockbox.org/
They've even got a simple installer which auto-detects your iPod version (or
other player if supported) and installs the appropriate build.
