[clug-talk] INTERNET BLOCKING

Hi there,

Just thought I'd chime in with my recommendations, based on use with my own
daughter:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1803 (ProCon Latte)

"ProCon is a content filter for the Firefox browser created by Corvineum,
and based on BlockXXX (by Tom Christensen). ProCon filters any type of
content on any web page. If left on default, ProCon limits itself to filter
pages containing explicit content automatically, based on the text. ProCon
can also be used as a profanity filter, and makes use of a whitelist -
useful for trusted sites."

http://procon.mozdev.org

I use this Firefox extension with my daughter and can attest to it's
effectiveness and ease of configuration out of the box.

Cheers!

Chris

I looked at the mozilla idea and did some reading up and it would seem that
its not quite ready for that yet. And as for my 3 daughters, they as of yet
wouldn't know how to go around the browser.

What is the deal with the dns thing. Keep in mind that im like cornel
klink. I KNOW NOTHING!!

Dan

I can record with my laptop, I have an external mike that could be used.

Possibly, I am not sure what the bank account is at these days, but I am
pretty sure that some fund raising would be required.

I have a camera and tripod that could be used. I will see if I can get
them back for Wednesday. After that it is pretty easy to post to the
website with a flash player (I know it is evil, but the code is open
source at least).

I had to do some shopping around for one of these in my last job so I
can offer some insights if you like. It was being used for board
meetings & the price was actually pretty reasonable for the unit they
did get.

As an alternative, could we not jut get an mp3 player with recordability
on it? I would imagine they would be pretty inexpensive for a one or
two GB unit.

More questions. How can I only allow certain websites to be browsed on my
kids laptop. It has teen puppy loaded on it. I looked on the 3 browsers on
it and cant figure it out. Is there a simple way??

I believe that you can control DNS lookups if you register an account with
OpenDNS, that way you could prevent lookups outside the allowable
web-space.

I assume that your son is not yet skill enough to defeat this....

Another way could be setting up dansguardian locally, but that's not the
easiest way of going about it.

A Firefox add-on is a possibility. Here is one, but I have not tried it.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5881

Obviously, if your kid wants to avoid it, they will just open up
another internet browser... boy, that takes me back.
