Do you have compiz or some other 3d render manager loaded?  I had
similar problems with the nVidia binary drivers and KDE4 with a machine
I no longer have. 

So, I would disable the "Desktop effects", which is found in
systemsettings -> Desktop -> "Desktop Effects" under the "General" tab.

I would also disable compiz/beryl etc.

Out of curiosity, which version of KDE is this?  Some more info on the
hardware might be useful as well.
