Usually I pre-load the OS on to a CF card. I use rs-232 to gain console
access. voyage linux is good at building a debian base, though these
days I pretty much just use OpenWRT x86 (again pre-loaded on a CF card).
The router boards I leave with the "router OS" as they are at client
site's some of them quite remote. I have programmed them from an rs-232
connection but lately I have been using their Windows utility from a VM
on my laptop. Once up and running they are configured via a web GUI.
Most of the hardware in this space uses CF or SD cards for the OS.
