If I remember right, kwrite uses Kate to provide the typing services, but
provides a simplified interface. (Not that Kate is toooo tough itself).
In Kate, you go to Settings -> Configure Kate. From there you select the
Open/Save section and un-check the "Local Files" under "backup on save" area.
(on KDE4, this is under the Advanced tab). I don't know hether or not that
change would carry over to kwrite though.
