The performance of virtual box (or any other solution that requires a

As far as I understand it, there are some great programs for this. This
is not my thing so I am not the best person to ask. I know that there
some people doing this sort of thing, so I am pretty sure it is doable.
Again, don't take my word for it.
On the other hand, audio and music is my bag, and I can tell you that
there are tons of applications that taken together, far exceed what I
can do under windows.

You do not need to replace your current install, they can be a part of
your regular Ubuntu install (essentially layering on top). Stop
thinking like a Windows or Mac user :)
