I believe that ipodlinux and rockbox suffer the same problem in that the
firmware on more recent ipods need to be signed.  For some reason Apple
 seems to be reluctant to cooperate.  Lets hear it for closed
proprietary systems.

Btw, I have a 3rd gen ipod nano.  I have long since given up on
replacing the Apple firmware.  It works well under Amarok, and I have
learned to work around the limitations of the built in firmware.
