First it would help to know what device this is. From a terminal run
the following:
lspci |grep -i audio
Next we need to find out if any drivers have been loaded:
lsmod |grep snd
If there are drivers loaded, just run alsamixer from the command line to
see if the drivers are correct (if you can see volume levels chances are
the drivers are correct and something else is blocking the sound device).
