Typically port 587 is used for this. There is nothing that requires
authentication, you have to configure your MTA to do that. It is
usually a good idea, along with TLS since you really don't want
usernames and passwords flying around in the clear. Google supports
both on the submission port (587) so you could use them as a smart host
an bypass telus. Here is an example:

It is equally applicable to servers connecting to smart hosts. In this
case the mail server is acting as a client to another mail server. If
his mail server is connecting directly to google and not to
smtp.telus.net, then his configuration is not working as all mail should
be directed at smtp.telus.net. I have not used sendmail in more than 10
years so I cannot be of more help.
For the record Exim is my MTA of choice. You could accomplish all of
this with Postfix as well, but I found Postfix to be awkward and
cumbersome in comparison to Exim. YMMV.
