Thanks Shawn,

I know exactly what you're talking about... that happens on every other 
computer I've ever used with KDE. There were NO controls whatsoever. It 
was unstoppable, so to say. I had to wait for it to finish or kill the 
process. The normal stop and pause buttons were absent. I finally got 
frustrated enough and just rebuilt my profile in a fresh home folder - 
which fixed the issue.
