Going with the basic video driver may be limiting you to 800x600.  In 
other words, to get larger resolutions, you probably need to use a 
different video driver.  The most basic driver is "vesa" which is rather 
generic and limited.

You can try changing your display resolution (one of the options under 
the System menu, I think - I don't use Gnome at the moment).  But I 
suspect this will be limited until you change the drivers.

If you open a terminal and issue the commands "lspci" and "lsusb" and 
then post the output from those back to us here, we'll be able to help 
more.  One of these commands will identify your specific video card 
(likely the lspci).

Once we know the specific video card, then the correct driver module can 
be installed/loaded and X-Windows can be configured to use that.  Which 
*should* grant you the ability to get up to 1024x768 at least (hopefully).
