Ungh, the Catalyst drivers are nothing short of terrible.  If your
hardware sports the HD moniker then it should be supported by the
radeonhd driver.  The Catalyst drivers support both the more recent
HDxxxx hardware and the previous generation, the radeonhd driver only
supports the more recent hardware.

The radeonhd driver is open (ATI hired Novel to write it) so it should
be an apt-get/yast/yum install away and no need to compile 3rd party
kernel modules.
